16 BUT
A sting of different words for the conjunction "but" are attested. In the Etymologies, the word for "but" is ná or nán. In Fíriel's Song, the short variant nan appears. One text (VT49:15) uses apa for “but”, but elsewhere, this is a preposition “after”. In Tolkien's drafts for a Quenya version of the Lord's Prayer, he was experimenting with many words for "but": anat, onë, ono (VT43:23; ono occurs also in another text in VT44:5/9, and shorter nó is attested in VT41:13), but in the final version of the Lord's Prayer, he used mal. We cannot know how many of these alternatives Tolkien would have considered conceptually valid and which were just experimental. For the purpose of writing in Quenya, the variant ná is probably best avoided since it can be confused with the copula "is"; likewise, nán (and nan?) may also mean *"I am" (ná, na- + the pronominal ending -n "I"). The Lord's Prayer variants are less ambiguous, and mal (the word used in the final version) is perhaps the best alternative so far published. BUT meaning "only" (as in "I am but a boy") may be rendered by er (only, one, alone, still). BUT YET a-nanta, ananta (and yet) –NDAN, LT1:269, FS, VT41:13, VT43:23 -

My room is small, but it is comfortable. There was nothing else for us to do but obey. But non to the main question. Who would do a thing like that? Nobody but her (him, me). I couldn't do anything but just sit here and hope. (3.) Придаточное предложение или отдельные слова и словосочетания, вводимые but после отрицаний, используются для того, чтобы подчеркнуть, что справедлива именно вторая часть высказывания (введенная but): They purpose of the scheme is not to help the employers but to provide work for young people. There is no doubt but that he is guilty. (4.) But 2. используется только после слов all - все, every one - каждый, any - любой, no - не и их производных, а так же в вопросах, начинающихся с what, who и where: We are all here but Mary. Every one knows the answer but me. Who but John would say that? She drove very fast to the airport, yet she missed the plane. Although/even thought my room is very small, it is very comfortable. Хотя комната у меня маленькая, она очень уютна/удобна; in spite of the fact that/despite the fact that - несмотря на то, что: In spite of the fact that my room is very small, it is very comfortable. They were all saved not excepting the captain. Except - наиболее близкое по значению к but, несколько более официально, но по сравнению с but не ограничено в своем употреблении характером сочетающихся с ним слов: not only but also - не только… He was not only foolish but also stubborn; however - однако. (6.) Когда but и yet соединяют два предложения, то эти предложения отделяются запятой (,): My room is very small, but it is comfortable. (7.) Когда however, even so соединяют два предложения, то они отделяются точкой с запятой (;), а слова however, even so отделяются запятой (,): I agree with you; however, we cannot accept your plan. (8.) Часть предложения, вводимая although/even though, in spite of the fact that/despite the fact that, может стоять в начале или конце предложения. Если эта часть предложения стоит в начале, перед главным предложением, то оно отделяется от него запятой (,): Although my room was small, it was very comfortable. My room is very comfortable although it is small. (9.) Сочетание can't/could not but do smth соответствует русскому не мог не: I could not but admire her. (10.). Сочетание next but one значит - через один (одну): Your stop is next but one. Сочетание last but one значит - предпоследний: He was last but one in the race.
